Types of Men’s Wool Coats

Wool Peacoat

The peacoat started life on navy ships, which is why it’s short, double-breasted and has a collar you can turn up against the wind. Wear it with jeans and boots and you’re done. A few of ours have anchor buttons.

Double-Breasted Wool Coat

This is the one for suits. It’s long enough to cover your jacket, and the peak lapels give your chest a bit more shape. Look closely at some styles and you’ll spot red contrast buttonholes.

Single-Breasted Wool Overcoat

Notch lapels, plain front. Nothing fancy, which is exactly why it goes with almost everything you own.

Car Coat

It stops at mid-thigh, so getting in and out of a car isn’t a fight. Some have cuff straps to keep drafts from running up your sleeves.

Hooded Wool Coat

Good for days when the wind won’t quit. A few versions come with a shearling or fur-style collar too.

Duffle Coat

You close it with toggles, which is handy when you’ve already got gloves on. The hood is lined in check.

Wool Trench Coat

Same shape as a classic trench, just made in wool for colder months. The back belt pulls in the waist so it doesn’t hang like a sack.

Wool Shirt Jacket

Think of it as a really heavy overshirt. It works on its own in fall or under a bigger coat in January.

Wool Café Racer

Short, slim and simple. If a full coat feels like too much, start here.

What Our Wool Coats Are Made Of

Our coats are made from a wool blend. Where the spec lists it, that’s 65% wool and 35% polyester. The wool holds in warmth and cuts the wind, while the polyester helps the coat keep its shape and stand up to a whole season of wear.

Inside, a printed lining lets the coat slide on easily over a sweater, with no tugging at the sleeves.

The finishing depends on the coat you pick: notch or peak lapels, anchor or silver-tone buttons, red contrast buttonholes, back belts and cuff straps.

Curious how we put them together? Here’s our jacket process.

How Should a Wool Coat Fit?

A wool coat shouldn’t pull across your chest when you button it. Try peacoats and car coats over a sweater. For overcoats, wear a suit jacket underneath, since that’s how you’ll actually use it.

The shoulder seam should land right at the edge of your shoulder. Sleeves should cover your shirt cuff, maybe a touch more.

Go by your chest measurement, not your usual jacket size. If you’re stuck between two sizes, take the bigger one. Our size guide has the numbers.

How to Choose the Right Wool Coat

  • Climate: Real winters with snow? Go long, with a double-breasted coat, a hooded coat or the duffle. If it’s mostly cold and damp, a peacoat or car coat will do. The shirt jacket and café racer are for milder days.
  • Occasion: Let the dress code guide you. If it’s going over a suit or to formal events, choose a long overcoat or a double-breasted coat. Weekends are more peacoat, car coat or duffle territory.
  • Color: Navy and charcoal are the safest picks, and black isn’t far behind. Camel, olive, heather gray, burgundy and brown look great with casual clothes and stand out more.
  • Features: Want a hood, a belted waist or toggles you can work with gloves on? Those details narrow things down fast.
  • Fabric: More wool means more warmth and a softer drape. A wool-polyester blend holds its shape better and is easier to look after, which makes it a good everyday choice.

How to Wear Men’s Wool Coats

  • A navy peacoat over a gray crew-neck, with dark jeans and brown boots. Easy weekend look.
  • Charcoal double-breasted coat, navy suit, white shirt, black Oxfords. That’s your office uniform sorted.
  • Camel overcoat with a black roll-neck and black trousers. Add suede Chelsea boots for dinner.
  • Olive hooded coat, cream sweater, straight jeans and white sneakers when it’s cold but you’re not dressing up.

Caring for Your Wool Coat

Proper care keeps your wool coat looking good for years. After wearing it, give it a quick brush and hang it on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. Let it air before you put it away, and follow the care label when cleaning.

Small marks usually come off with a damp cloth. For a full clean or stubborn stains, professional dry cleaning is the safest option. Read our wool coat care guide for more detailed advice.
